I became interested in this topic while I was listening about simultaneous interpreters. At one of the lectures we were told that after negotiations the translator was asked what was discussed and what the interlocutors discussed. The interpreter could not even roughly name the topic of the conversation, which he had just translated perfectly and professionally accurately for quite a long time. This is explained by the too fast pace of work. The brain has time to accept, process, and “translate” the incoming text into another language, but the consciousness does not have time to perceive, process and comprehend the information. Thus, the work of simultaneous speech translation proceeds as if “without the presence” of the translator’s personality. Only the brain and speech apparatus work. What is heard does not have time to be realized. Let's move on. Scientists say. If we use special equipment to record what is happening in the human brain at the time when he makes a decision, then it will be clear that the brain processed the information and made a decision a few seconds before how the person signaled that he had made a decision. Sorry for the repetition, but, as they say, you couldn’t say it more eloquently. The brain made a decision before the person made it (than he knew about it). Scientists call this situation almost offensive - there is a period of time when the brain has already made a decision, but the person does not yet know about it. And it is not clear who to ask the question - who makes a decision? Who, in fact, is the boss of the house? This is a serious challenge to our civilization, because now a person can say - it was not I who committed this act. My brain decided to do this. It was he who suggested me to do this. I'm just a performer. Innocent. The Contractor is not responsible for his actions. And such cases, such trials have already happened in other states. “It’s not me who is guilty, but my brain,” said the defendant. Scientists are seriously puzzled. This shifts our ethical understanding of the world. This calls into question such an important thing for all civilized countries as the presumption of innocence, because, for example, in England and America there are already catalogs of scans - the brain of a criminal. Scientists say that the “joke” of our brain is not limited to what it accepts decisions for us. He also sends us a signal, convinces us that the decision made belongs to us personally. We have no doubt that we are responsible for the decision that comes to us. So do we really have free will? – humanity still has to deal with this issue. And now – take a deep breath. Exhale. All of the above applies only to the so-called experimental solutions, namely those that do not imply long thought and comprehension - It’s not for nothing that we started the conversation with an example about a simultaneous interpreter. About the case when the brain has the opportunity to make a decision in seconds, when awareness has not yet turned on. A translator working outside the non-stop system is perfectly aware of what exactly he is translating, and scientists hope that the decisions that we managed to think about are made by us and with our full responsibility. The moral of this article is to be afraid of impulsive decisions, count to ten according to your grandmother’s old way before doing anything and answering.
