And so, why should a psychologist go to another psychologist? Why shouldn't a psychologist work with himself if he understands psychology? During the training of a practicing psychologist, the educational organization that prepares him usually requires him to undergo therapy. What is it for? It is important for an aspiring psychologist to get to know himself: to understand what stereotypical beliefs he has, how he builds communication with other people, what strengths he can rely on in his work, how he manifests himself in difficult situations, etc. Of course, this is not only getting to know yourself, but also making some other changes to yourself, if this turns out to be important and necessary for the psychologist. All this helps because the psychologist does not burden the client with his problems. And by dealing with his own difficulties, which may not be directly related to his professional activities, he gains an understanding of what it is like to be a client, which is generally important for a better understanding of the client. Yes, and by overcoming his difficulties, he gains invaluable experience, which he can rely on in the future in his work. And even for an experienced psychologist with extensive work experience, knowing oneself, improving oneself and one’s skills is never useless. No matter how long a person goes to therapy, it is in principle impossible to deal with all the difficulties, overcome everything, and fully know oneself. And often it’s not even necessary. I talked about this in this article of mine. A psychologist can go to another psychologist if he is interested in getting to know himself and constantly improving. A psychologist remains a person and problems may arise in his life. If he cannot cope with them himself, does this indicate his insufficient training as a specialist? I think not, and here's why. Self-help, as practice has shown, was not effective enough, and therefore psychological help arose. It is known that no matter how many books on psychology you read, it does not often help solve the problem. And the point here is not at all a lack of knowledge in psychology or work experience, if we are talking about a psychologist. The fact is that much in our life is natural for us, too ordinary, familiar, normal, and if it is normal and habitual, then we have no reason to pay attention to it and we don’t pay attention to it, we don’t notice, although it would be useful. This is how our psyche works. Therefore, with psychological help, we need another who can notice what we do not notice in us, another who will notice the difference between us. Of course, the help of a psychologist does not consist only in noticing something. Although, noticing something often turns out to be very useful and promoting. Yes, turning to a psychologist always helps to solve this or that difficulty faster and more effectively. And this does not mean that a psychologist cannot solve many problems that arise in his life on his own. Maybe, but it is not always possible to do this, and I want to further emphasize this, as effectively and quickly as together with another psychologist. The ability to ask for help is precisely a sign of a well-prepared psychologist. To be continued.
