Today I would like to talk about one of the great figures in psychotherapy, Albert Ellis. It is unlikely that in this article it will be possible to describe all his professional advantages, but I will only talk about the main ideas that I really like. In order to create his method of rational therapy, Ellis went a long way, was influenced by various psychological approaches, Eastern and philosophical wisdom. The main task that formed the basis of the method of rational therapy is the use of techniques and tools for the development of critical thinking. Thanks to this, people have the ability to think correctly and treat various situations realistically. Ellis identified only three universal attitudes, thanks to which , a person develops anxiety and restlessness. All of them belong to the categories of must and form strict demands on himself, other people and the world as a whole. I must always act well and excellently in order to win the approval and recognition of other people; if this does not happen, I am no good. All the people around me in general, they should perceive me as I would like, if this does not happen, then they are bad and deserve punishment and condemnation. I should always have what I want and when I want. And I myself don’t owe anyone anything. Thanks to irrational thinking, people often unconsciously bring themselves to the point of mental illness, causing depression and neurosis. As Ellis believed, such depressive thinking often causes hopelessness, helplessness and self-pity. And formation critical and rational thinking is one of the effective measures that alleviate such conditions and help reduce their severity. But we can develop our critical thinking into habits to improve our lives and relationships. One of the key elements of rational therapy is practice, the essence of which is to teach a person to discuss and challenge their irrational thoughts in order to get healthy pleasure in life.
