Stories of childhood trauma are always unique, and adults can come up with everything they can to play out their complexes and dark sides on children. Children are defenseless and dependent, it’s easy to take advantage of their gullibility and helplessness. Example: A stepfather gives children the roles of dolls, and puts them on himself mask. He's a puppeteer. Much in this game depends on his mood. Today he is kind, puts on a kind mask, and the game becomes fun. Tomorrow he is drunk and the mask is evil, and he has an ax in his hands... The game is scary. The problem is that the role is fixed very deep in the structures of the child’s psyche the puppeteer as an outsider controlling his personality. The puppeteer becomes part of the personality of the child himself. The child grows up, and now the adult does not understand what is disturbing his internal equilibrium and balance, why he strives to keep this world under control (lack of trust in the world) and why any change of situation, any surprise, uncertainty and unpredictability, despite the fact that this is the most ordinary situation in life, for example, just a trip to a resort. When such a puppeteer exerts a destructive influence unconsciously, it is impossible to gain integrity and live in peace, solving problems as they arise. In such cases emotional state, its intensity does not correspond to the current situation. When obedience is sought from a child, regardless of the peculiarities of the formation of his personality, such consequences are possible as - identification with authority (in this case, with the puppeteer) - humility (victim of the puppeteer) - rebellion These three scenarios unconsciously unfold in the life of an adult in relationships with others, one is replaced by another depending on the current situation. But rebellion in the form of resistance can manifest itself in the process of psychotherapy. The puppeteer is afraid of exposure, afraid of losing his power and letting the victim go, and the victim and the rebel cannot imagine their life without the puppeteer, they have never lived differently. The peculiarity of deep psychotherapy is that this puppeteer can be brought to light. When fear, which caused both humility, on the one hand, and rebellion and aggression, on the other, is neutralized, in the light of awareness, the puppeteer himself is deprived of strength, energy and power. And then the creative potential of an already integral personality is revealed. And it doesn’t matter what happened in childhood, what matters is how an adult manages it. Will he remain a product of the psychological trauma inflicted by adults, or will he deal with a difficult legacy and become the master of his own scenarios and states. © psychologist Natalya Tsybina, 2023 Short-term help in solving psychological problems for a fulfilling life!
